What is SEO?

The internet is the crux of today’s marketing industry, and if you want to succeed with online advertising, you’ll have to know what search engines look for and how you can structure your content to attract your target audience.

One of the fundamental aspects of digital advertising is SEO, or search engine optimization. SEO can be generally defined as a means of increasing traffic in terms of both quality and quantity through earned organic search results.

What is SEO and how does it work?

SEO serves as a means to attract not just more visits to your site, but also attract the type of clients that your business needs to grow. Without structured SEO, you may wind up receiving a lot of clicks, but these could be misdirections. The main objective of SEO implementation is to steer web crawlers in the right direction, so that the people who are presented with your site in their search results are looking for whatever it is you offer.

SEO also strives to produce organic results. This means you don’t pay for advertisements on other sites or on search results, but instead show up on the top hits and therefore receive more traffic naturally.

To fully understand SEO, you have to understand how a web search happens. When a person visits a search engine such as Google, they type in a set of keywords. Let’s say you’re searching for “Used Apple Computers”. When you hit enter, Google then crawls the internet (also the world wide web, hence the crawling) and finds websites that contain keywords, phrases and information that are relevant to your query.

It may sound pretty basic, but it’s actually quite complex and there are a variety of factors that contribute to how likely a website is to be found easily by Google, Bing or the like. An analysis by Moz, 20.94 percent of Google ranking factors was comprised of domain-level, link authority features. These include the quantity of links to the site, the quantity of trusted sites linking to your site, the Page Rank, etc.
